What is a tar.gz file?

A tar.gz file is basically two files wrapped into one. The first one is a tar file (sometimes referred to as a tarball), a collection of files & folders wrapped into a single package. The tar file then gets compressed into a gz file, utilising the GNU zip (gzip) compression algorithm.

This is a common pattern used in unix/linux environments to bundle multiple files for easier distribution or backup.

Tgz and tar.gz files are essentially the same thing, just with different file extension.

How to convert tgz/tar.gz to zip file?

  1. Under "Select file to convert", click on browse (or your browser equivalent)
  2. Select the file you wish to convert.
  3. Click "Convert to ZIP". It will initiate the conversion and automatically save zip file to your drive on completion.

Unlike other zip and unzip online utilities, ezyZip does not require you to upload or download files to a server. It runs locally as a browser app, thus making it much quicker than other similar zip and unzip online tools. This also ensures your privacy will be protected as no file data will leave your browser.
