What is a TAR.LZ4 file?
A TAR.LZ4 file combines the TAR archiving format with LZ4 compression. Files are first archived using TAR, preserving their structure and metadata, then compressed with LZ4, an extremely fast compression algorithm. This format prioritizes speed over compression ratio, making it ideal for scenarios where processing time is critical.
LZ4 compression is designed for applications requiring real-time data compression, offering decompression speeds that can reach multiple gigabytes per second on modern hardware. While it doesn't achieve the compression ratios of algorithms like BZIP2 or Zstandard, its exceptional speed makes TAR.LZ4 perfect for backup systems, log compression, and other applications where rapid processing is essential. When creating TAR.LZ4 archives with ezyZip, date information is not included and empty directories are not added to the resulting archive file.
